How have you grown at Finalta?
I started my journey at Finalta as an Analyst in 2015. From day one, there was a big focus on development, with support available from other Analysts, Directors and the support team. Finalta’s open office culture makes everyone really approachable and everyone is encouraged to pursue their own path, based on what they enjoy and what they want for their career. Now as a manager, a big part of my role is supporting those in my team, to get the most out of them and ensure that they have the same opportunities that I did.
What are the main challenges you face in your role?
I usually have a couple of projects running at the same time, and so managing conflicting priorities and deadlines can be a challenge. Luckily, we have a very supportive team who are happy to help out when we need extra support.
What is the culture like at Finalta?
It’s a very friendly and open place. We have an incredibly diverse team which means everyone has very different experiences to bring to the table. For example, there are over 30 languages spoken fluently at Finalta (out of 160 colleagues)! As someone from the LGBT community, it has been really easy to be open with everyone in my team – from Directors to Analysts and the support team – and there’s the option to network with other LGBT colleagues at McKinsey through GLAM (Gays & Lesbians @ McKinsey).
What diversity groups do Finalta have, and what is their purpose?
Along with GLAM, there’s a range of diversity groups such as our Women’s Initiative, Black network, Asian network, Disability support group. It’s a great place to network and they provide support to anyone in our community that needs it.
Do you believe that LGBT diversity is equally appreciated and supported across all global offices?
Certainly. There are GLAM members in our other office locations, along with senior leadership “allies” in every office. Finalta also has its own Diversity and Inclusion training which every colleague attends worldwide, highlighting the importance of this to our business.
How would you describe a typical day on the Finalta Insurance team?
Most of our team get into the office between 9am and 10am (unless visiting clients). When we’re not in meetings, brainstorms or speaking to clients on the phone, you’ll often find us working through analytics pieces for our clients and discussing new ideas in the kitchen. We have a talkative team, which you’ll notice when we all go for lunch, but we also get our heads down when we have a busy period.
What advice would you give to someone joining Finalta?
Always strive to ask more questions and learn as much as you can. Finalta prides itself on creating opportunities to develop and we want you to take advantage as much as possible.
Thinking back over your time here, what is your favourite memory?
I went to a Conference with GLAM last year in Lisbon. It was 350 GLAM members from across the world, meeting for 3 days to discuss what it was like to work in offices from across the world and learning from the LGBT executives at McKinsey. I learned a huge amount, met a few partners who were truly inspirational and made some great friends that I’m still in touch with today.
