Dave is a Manager in our London office
He joined with no prior banking or consulting experience, but his passion for our work and his focus on personal growth, led to him being promoted 3 times
How would you describe a typical day at Finalta?
It’s difficult to outline as every day is varied! Typically, I use my first hour to organize my day. When the team arrive, we have a morning update to focus us on our daily/weekly priorities. My morning can then include reviewing work of the team to help push our thinking further or creating client deliverables for ongoing projects. At lunch, I head to the gym as I find focusing on something else prepares me well for a productive afternoon. The afternoon could be spent updating clients on progress, leading meetings on critical project workstreams or helping the team maintain momentum on our project deliverables.
As a Manager what are your main responsibilities?
Our overarching responsibility is to help lead a given project with 5-10 clients and typically overseeing a small team of Analysts. You will be responsible for owning the project plan for your clients, deadlines for deliverables, client communication and ensuring the Analysts are working effectively and producing work of a high standard, whether that is data analysis or producing presentations for clients. Additional non-project responsibilities could include assisting a Director with client development work, creating the project plan for the next 6 months, developing and evolving the scope of the next project or collaborating on bespoke client work.
How have you grown at Finalta?
Immensely! I joined Finalta in 2013 as an Analyst just looking to get an ‘in’ into financial services consulting. I’ve been promoted 3 times and am now a Manager, leading projects and overseeing my own team of Analysts. I’ve worked across 5 different core projects, have visited and presented to clients in more than 5 countries, have been intrinsic in setting up a new team within the Finalta business which now has 6 full time staff (from just me in 2014) I hope to become a role-model for new junior Finaltians wanting to become a leader.
What advice would you give to someone joining Finalta?
I joined Finalta with a background which had nothing to do with benchmarking, consulting or banking so came with, honestly, little perspective on any of those topics. I would encourage anybody now joining Finalta, regardless of what level, to come with an open mind but a passion for data, analysis and being able to provide clients narratives which are so powerful they will form the basis of their strategic thinking for years to come.
Thinking back over your time here, what is your favorite memory?
My favorite memory was during a call talking through a presentation with a main stakeholder. He stopped me mid-sentence with “Let me just stop you there Dave” - I immediately presumed something was wrong before he proclaimed “Can I just say this is mind-melting analysis. Just fantastic. You can now continue”. This was great to hear and showed the impact Finalta has and how we’re able to go into depths nobody else can, with a clarity that makes our analysis both compelling and actionable.
How would you describe the culture here?
Incredibly close-knit, open and hard-working but in a relaxed environment. Many businesses talk of ‘the company culture’ and have a mantra or 5 words which they use to describe the culture. 9 times in 10 it isn’t the reality. Finalta is the only company I have ever experienced where the culture of the business is so much of an engrained value, that it permeates everything we do and stand for.
